They can carry thrust loads parallel to the shaft axis
TAKE AN OIL-LUBRICATED HORIZONTAL sleeve bearing, turn it 90°, then flatten it out, just as the cylindrical rotor/stator assembly of an induction motor is flattened out to form a linear motor. It can then carry thrust loads applied parallel to the shaft axis. To add a second important feature: divide the bearing surface into separate segments (shoes or pads), such that each can tilt slightly to form its own wedge-shaped oil film between the stationary shoes and a revolving thrust block or "runner."
