There never has lived a person who could claim that chlorophyll coursed through his veins. Yet, for all the fundamental differences between animal and vegetable, we gardeners admire many of the same qualities in plants that we do in people. Constancy. Reliability. Stamina. Perseverance. Resourcefulness. Determination. Tenacity. Grit.
We therefore celebrate the garden's "old faithfuls," those stalwart plants that survive the ages with no assistance from us. They may be bulbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, or vines. It matters not. What does matter is how their longevity and timeless beauty link generations of gardeners.
