Developing and implementing radiographer comment systems: Issues for consideration

Background

Since the early 1980s, radiographers in the UK have participated in red dot schemes to alert accident and emergency (A&E) practitioners (regardless of professional background) to the presence of radiographically detectable trauma.

For many radiographers, participation in such a scheme was on the understanding that it had no legal standing with all responsibility and professional accountability for interpreting the radiograph being devolved to the referring A&E practitioner. This belief has been strongly contradicted by Dimond who argued that no system of patient care, including one informally undertaken, could be devoid of professional accountability.1
