EPA ADMINISTRATOR LEAVITT STEPPING DOWN TO HEAD HHS

-Sources Surprised With Announcement; No Immediate Successor Named-

After little more than a year on the job, EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt has been nominated to become secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), President George W. Bush announced last week.

As EPA administrator, Leavitt "has enforced high standards and a spirit of cooperation" and "upheld this administration's commitment to sustain improvements in the quality of the natural environment," Bush said.

HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson recently announced his departure, adding his name to a host of other cabinet officials.
