'What do we do if the propeller falls off?" I'm crewing on a motorsailer (it has a sheltered doghouse protecting the steering position) in the North Sea. The boat feels as if it must totally disintegrate as it slams up and down on steep, short waves. Benj, who's about my age, has a cheerful craggy face with bushy eyebrows. He explains that the propeller's fallen off three times before.
When I join it, the boat's been in Holland for a few weeks. On the shuttle bus from Luton railway station (north of London) to the airport, to catch the plane to Amsterdam, someone says my name.
