Horse slaughter ends in February

WASHINGTON - The appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) exited bicameral conference with an in-tact amendment that eliminates funding for horse slaughter inspections.

The measure was under scrutiny in conference, but last-minute negotiations reached a compromise: The amendment will not go into effect for 120 days. The USDA will not have funding for horse slaughter plant inspections from February 2006 until the budget bill expires in September.
