ANDANTE AND 1130 5 CDs
It is difficult to recall, even for those of us old enough to do so, a time when Wagner simply was not available. When I was an enthusiastic young Wagnerite there was no recording of the Ring Cycle available to me and, unless one lived in London, precious little chance to heat it. For earlier generations the problem was even greater, which is why Stokowski's live performances of orchestral arrangements and his recordings are so important. For vast numbers it was the only way to encounter the sound of Wagner's orchestra.
As such this set is a very valuable record of both Stokowski's approach to the operas and his range of recordings. There is ...
