Before any African American had earned a diploma from Harvard College, black students were graduating from Harvard Medical School. In the final three decades of the nineteenth century, eight black men had earned their medical degrees from Harvard University.
IN LATE OCTOBER 1850 the Harvard Medical Faculty received a letter from Mr. Charles Brooks, a respected Boston clergyman, inquiring whether Daniel Laing Jr., "a young man of colour," would be admitted to the winter course of lectures at Harvard Medical School.
A few days later another letter arrived, dated November 1. This one was signed by Alan R. Thompson and Joseph Tracy of the American Colonization office in Boston, and inquired ...
