Hardwood flooring continues its comeback

A higher-quality, natural surface will have another strong year.

The year 2004 was the best since the mid-1960s for shipments of hardwood flooring, and 2005 is likely to be another strong year, says Timm Locke, executive vice president of the Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association, a Memphis-based trade group of some 30 companies.

Much of the gain comes from the strong housing market. "People are more interested in their homes," Locke says. "Consumers prefer hardwood flooring to other materials such as tile or carpeting."
