Less than three hours after arriving on station in the Northern Arabian Gulf at 6:00 p.m. on 17 October, Navy and Marine Corps aircraft assigned to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt were launched to strike targets up to 1,000 miles away in Afghanistan. Less than a week before, the carrier had been ordered to proceed "at best speed" to the war zone from the Mediterranean Sea.
