To put it in perspective, not only does Curt Morin have to go farther and farther south to find work, his competitors from the north have migrated this way to feed on his territory. And if that weren't bad enough in a tough, modestly fertile industry, they're spoiled on Canadian dollars.
Morin is president of Bennington Iron Works. He's seen 40 of his US counterparts go out of business in recent years. And, while, "In the best of times it's been competitive." the Canadians are thrilled, he said, to come south on 73 cents on the dollar.
