Article: Shave ice tycoon returns to isles with cool profit

REN Hallett had spent 15 years in Hawaii, much of it selling bank equipment, when he went home to Indiana in 16, without much of a plan but a little bit of a dream.

He had been familiar with shave ice as a cool refresher in the warm Hawaii days and he'd seen an ice shaving machine sitting mostly idle at a restaurant and bar he frequented, TGI Fridays on Ward Avenue.

Ten year later, he has been involved in the opening of hundreds of shave ice stands across the mainland and has made a thriving business out of supplying equipment, syrups, cups and training to many other entrepreneurs who have brought this unique island treat to their home towns.
