Article: Cochlear Implant Fellowships Expand Training

The expansion of cochlear implant (Cl) technology has brought challenges to professionals and clinics providing medical, audiological and habilitative services to Cl candidates and users.

In a recent study published in Laryngoscope (113[9]: 1470-2 [September 2003]), Dr. Simon Parisier concluded that the field does not have the capacity to make CIs available to a larger number of candidates. Challenges include inadequate insurance coverage and a critical shortage of specialists able to manage a steady stream of new patients while simultaneously providing long-term services to current CI users.
