THE LACK OF SOLID ECONOMIC BENEFITS IS often mentioned as a limiting factor to the future use of information systems. If a comparison is made of investments in control systems versus information systems, it can be seen that control systems have a better chance of survival because control is automatic.
Information systems, however, require constant use to provide results. The results from process information systems are proportional to the ability to delegate responsibility to operating people. Many mills have reported excellent results from their process information systems, with an increase in employee efficiency ranging from a low of 5% to a high of 50%.
