The Sultanate of Oman: A Twentieth Century History, by Miriam Joyce. Westport, CT and London: Praeger Publishers, 1995. xv + 124 pages. Bibl. essay to p. 126. Index to p. 131. $45. Miriam Joyce, an assistant professor at the University of Purdue, Calumet, has written a very brief and uneven survey of Omani history in the 20th century. The theme would appear to be the Sultanate 's struggle to retain "its status as an independent power. . . [while] beset by numerous obstacles" (p. xiv). The book is based on American and British government records, interviews with current Omani officials, memoirs, and secondary sources on Oman.
