In 1993 the population within the borders of Hungary was 10.3 million, of which 600,000 were Gypsies and 80,000 were Jews and 1.3% were of other nationalities (such as German, Slavonian, Slovak, Croatian, Rumanian, and Serbian). A five-year joint project (1984-1989) of the German and Hungarian Academies of Science studied 12 samples from 11 ethnic groups (Czeizel et al. 1991). Although more than 11 ethnic groups live in Hungary, available resources limit the field studies to only the most well known.
