New pool rules

This Greenville, South Carolina, pool broke all the rules. It's surrounded by trees. It's built on a slope. It's tinted a dark color. And it's not even in the backyard.

First, the trees. "They're not a problem," says Deborah McCauley "We have one of those underwater cleaners-we named it Herbieand between Herbie and my husband, Jack, who scoops out leaves in the fall and occasionally in the summer, the pool stays clean."

That's because the trees are hardwoods. Unlike evergreens, which shed year-round, hardwoods tend to make a big mess once a year in fall. The pool is carefully tucked into the wooded site, so there are pockets of sun as well as plenty of shade on the deck.
