For many years there has been no up-to-date introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls to recommend to an undergraduate class or a nonacademic audience. E. M. Cook has written one of three such works that appeared in the last year, the others being James C. VanderKam, The Dead Sea Scrolls Today (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1994), and Lawrence H. Schiffman, Reclaiming the Dead Sea Scrolls: History of Judaism, background of Christianity and Lost Library of Qumran (Philadelphia/New York: Jewish Publication Society, 1995).
