The United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) first Human Development Report 1990 was the brainchild of the late Mahbub ul Haq, whose deep insight and intellectual acumen gave rise to a new conceptual framework in the literature of development.1 Today, more than a decade after the publication, this conceptual framework has gained a special place at the global level, exerting enormous influence on decision-makers, researchers, academicians and ordinary citizens.
