For years, from childhood to adulthood, on October 31, I would go from house to house in my neighborhood wearing the black cape of a vampire or the red, horned face of the devil or the white, shriveled skin of a zombie, possibly carrying a lantern or lit plastic pumpkin in my hand, knocking on doors and, with a large brown paper bag, yelling "Trick or Treat" to ask for candy (or money if I was brave).

Because almost every family I knew celebrated Halloween, I didn't have to beg for a thing. Just go home, pour that overstuffed bag of goodies on the couch and begin munching on Baby Ruths, ...
