Great River Energy Plans $3 Billion JV CTL Plant

Minnesota-based Great River Energy, a coal-based power generator, plans to build a $3 billion coal-to-diesel plant with its partners Headwater Inc., North American Coal Co. and Falkirk Mining Co. in North Dakota.

While the specific location of the future plant was undecided, Al Christianson, Great River Energy's project spokesman told GTLN that the consortium has tentatively decided upon Falkirk Mining Co.'s coal mine property near Great River's 1,200 MW Coal Creek electrical generating station about 50 miles north of Bismark.

The plans call for the plant to be built in five phases. The first phase would cost about $750 million to $1 billion and the combined cost of the other four phases ...
