Underground Coal Gasification Schemes Are Revisited

Nearly twenty years after U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) pulled the plug on the last underground coal gasification (UCG) test scheme in Wyoming, the idea is getting fresh wind thanks to soaring oil and gas prices and abundant un-mineable coal resources.

UCG is the in-situ gasification of coal in the seam. It is achieved by injecting oxidants, gasifying the coal and bringing the product gas to surface through boreholes drilled from the surface.

Several companies and governments around the world now see UCG re-emerging not only for "clean" electric power production (via integrated gasification combined cycle/IGCC plants) but also for FT diesel production.
