Article: Adventure Cycling celebrates 20 years

This month, Adventure Cycling (formerly BikeCentennial) celebrates the 20th anniversary of the event which gave the association its beginning--the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, a 4,250-mile 90-day ride across the country that attracted more than 3,000 riders.

It began in Virginia and ended in Oregon. It was an event recorded by Time magazine and National Geographic, and it was an event that changed how Americans perceive the sport of biking.

"Back then bicycling was considered this oddball activity," said Greg Siple, founder of the trail. "And now it's really become mainstream--bicycling has the same status as a baseball bat now."
