Though tourism is now the state's second biggest industry, worth an estimated $1.2 billion and $260 million to the Glacier-Waterton area, some Montanans still consider it a mixed blessing.
A 1994 Lincoln County study echoes others done around western Montana that show mixed reactions tourism.
Asked whether the tourism industry provides worthwhile economic benefit, a solid 59 percent of Libby area residents agreed or strongly agreed, while only 24 percent disagreed.
But three-fourths of those surveyed believed that the jobs provided were low-paying, and 44 percent felt that tourists did not pay their fair share for the impacts they created. Only 39 percent felt tourism was paying its own way.
