Recreation space on Kirkwood Community College's main campus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa was limited and what existed was used primarily by the College's formal competitive athletic programs. A new facility was planned and it would be reserved for the general student and faculty population.
The facility houses a 200 meter running track which is central in dictating the overall form of the building. The glass enclosed ends of the track punctuate the otherwise rectilinear building and allow track users to have a continuous view of the exterior. The track surrounds basketball, volleyball and tennis courts and a batting cage. These spaces form the central volume of the building.
