The British Royal Navy recently disposed of two 60year-old sea mines found 1.5 miles south of Plymouth Sound Breakwater in coastal waters off England. It is believed they were dropped by a bomber in World War II.
The first mine was discovered about a mile off the coast of Penlee Point near Plymouth during routine surveying work by the Royal Navy Mine Hunter HMS Blyth. The second mine was discovered during the operation to detonate the first.
The operation involved surveying by Blyth with her stateof-the-art mine hunting sonar, which uses the same type of ultrasound as pregnancy scans to search for objects on the seabed. All shipping was contacted to keep clear after the first mine was ...
