Democratic societies that champion free speech must tackle the issue of hate speech. In a February 14 webchat, law professor Michael Curtis said that dialogue and social pressure can be effective methods of limiting hate speech.

Hate speech is defined as speech intended to harm, threaten, or provoke violence against someone based on race, ethnicity, nationality, belief system, sexual orientation or disability, through written or oral communication. Countries treats the issue differently.
