Article: Top Hat shut out of bus contracts

Faced with no bus service for people with special needs, La Crosse city and county officials have awarded interim contracts to two bus companies for the rest of the year.

Top Hat Inc., which has the contract with the city and La Crosse County to provide the specialneeds bus service, said it would terminate the contract by Feb. 20 if officials weren't willing to renegotiate rates.

The La Crosse County Human Services Board voted Tuesday and La Crosse Municipal Transit Utility voted Wednesday to award the urban service contract to Laidlaw, a local company, and the contract for rural service to Abby Vans of Neillsville, Wis.
