Article: Celebrating the Tennessee Walking Horse

Riders circling the arena seem to float. They don't bounce on saddles, twist at reins, or sway in stirrups as they perch with shoulders squared, legs relaxed, gazes calmly fixed. The horses, too, glide in fluid motion.

To the uninitiated, watching Tennessee walking horses can be perplexing. Hind hooves overstep front. Front legs kick tremendously high and dart far ahead. Heads reach higher than expected, and haunches slope lower.

Yet for all this potential gangliness, they're remarkably graceful. To fans, such traits amount to poetry in motion.
