When Parsippany's Hospitality Franchise Systems changed its name to HFS in September 1995, it seemed the company was just swapping a mouthful of a moniker for a neat acronym. In retrospect, though, it is likely that HFS's purpose was more direct. In just about a year, the company has moved far beyond its original field. HFS has become a franchisor of hotel brands like Ramada and Days Inn as well as housing brokerages under the Coldwell Banker and Century 21 banners. Now HFS is reportedly going after another big target: Avis.
Neal Allen, an HFS spokesman, declines to comment on press reports that HFS is trying to buy Avis. "We are always looking for brands," is his only statement. Henry R. ...
