When Jayme Burgman and Gene Komondor founded McKeesport-based TransCare Pennsylvania Inc. in 1988, there was plenty of room for growth.

"Mom-and-pops were cropping up everywhere and making money in spite of themselves," says Komondor, vice president of TransCare, which he helped start with two used ambulances and six employees.

But by 1993 the market had matured, closing in on TransCare's growth potential. The company's sales flattened out.

That's when Burgman and Komondor found the growth opportunity of a lifetime: TransCare was awarded a bid to provide ambulance service in 29 counties for participants of Blue Cross of Pennsylvania's HMO program, Keystone Health Plan.
