Positive phase III results for Atlanta, GA-based CytRx Corp.'s CRL-5861 (purified poloxamer 188) as a treatment for acute sickle cell crisis were published recently in the Journal of theAmerican Medical Association (vol. 286, no. 17). In a randomized, double-blind, intention-to-treat trial, 255 sickle cell disease patients with a painful episode severe enough to require hospitalization and narcotic analgesics were given an infusion of purified poloxamer 188 or placebo.The mean duration of painful episodes was significantly shorter in the active-treatment group (133 hours) compared with the placebo group (141 hours).This improvement was more pronounced in children age 15 or younger ...
