The pitching coach Rick Peterson jogged to the mound to talk with his rookie reliever, Joe Smith, in the eighth inning of Wednesday night's game against the Padres. The score was tied, with two on and two outs, and a left-handed hitter, Geoff Blum, was coming to the plate. Not a minute later, Peterson came right back out.
