Shares in Vonage, the Internet telephone provider, rose sharply in after-hours trading yesterday after the company announced a settlement in a patent dispute with Verizon. Under the settlement, Vonage agreed to pay Verizon one of two amounts, depending on whether Vonage persuades an appeals court to rehear a lawsuit that Verizon won against itthis year.If the court agrees to rehear the suit, Vonage will pay Verizon $80 million, said Charles Sahner, a spokesman for Vonage. If the court rejects the appeal, it will pay $117.5 million. Vonage has agreed to pay an additional $2.5 million to charity.
