I wonder what Matt Lauer would make of "Cleaver." He might want to take a look at it, one morning during makeup, perhaps, because like Harold Cleaver - the bulbous protagonist of Tim Parks's excellent new novel - Lauer has tangled on camera with an American president. He has felt, against painted cheeks, the heat of power perturbed. Readers may remember Lauer's televised set-to with George W.
