The Federal Aviation Administration today authorized commercial airlines to begin using a satellite-based navigation system for landing in bad weather. The Global Positioning System will initially be used at more than 1,000 small American airports where such landings are often prohibited because of low visibility, but it is eventually expected to replace traditional navigational aids throughout the air transportation industry. Government officials and the airline industry predicted that the new system would improve airline reliability, increase flight safety and reduce operating costs by reducing fuel consumption and flight time.
