Brett Tomko pitched six solid innings and the San Diego Padres won their season-high seventh in a row yesterday, defeating the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-3, and pulling tohalf a game behind first-place Arizona in the National League West. The Padres remained two and a half games in front of Philadelphia in the wild-card race.If the Padres hold on to claim a playoff spot, Tomko will not be eligible because he was not signed until Sept. 4, 10 days after he was designated for assignment by the Los AngelesDodgers.
