Article: British Troops Kill 7 Gunmen in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - British troops killed seven gunmen in a raid on a renegade police unit in southern Iraq on Monday, and a car bomb that exploded next to an open-air market in Baghdad killed nine civilians.

The car bombing, which also injured 11 people, took place a mostly Shiite district in the eastern part of the Iraqi capital that often attracts crowds of shoppers, as well as laborers looking for work.

Separately, a suicide bomber attacked a police checkpoint at the entrance to a university in the city of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, a stronghold of the Sunni-dominated insurgency and one of the most dangerous places in Iraq for U.S. troops. A curfew was imposed in the area. ...
