Article: House Arrest in Pa. Pier Collapse Case

PHILADELPHIA - A judge sentenced the proprietor of a waterfront nightclub and the owner of a pier that collapsed under it seven years ago, killing three, to house arrest Friday for ignoring signs that the pier wasn't stable.

Pier owner Michael Asbell was sentenced to 11 to 22 months of house arrest plus probation and Eli Karetny, operator of the Heat nightclub, was sentenced to nine to 18 months of house arrest followed by probation.

"I wish I didn't have the dreams that I had, because they turned into such nightmares," Asbell said as he tearfully apologized to the victims' relatives.

"This great thing we thought we created turned into the most horrible thing of my life," he said.
