Using HighBeam Web

You can begin using HighBeam Web in two easy steps.

Enter a question or keywords in the box at the top of the HighBeam Web search page. Because the words that you type into the research text box are the words for which HighBeam Web searches for, choose your search words carefully.

Second, select the types of web sources – or Research Groups – you would like to search by selecting a Research Group from the list below the research text box.

Research Groups

HighBeam Web has over 75 different Web sources available to search. It would be time consuming and unwieldy to search them all at once, and you could never see all the results. Instead, HighBeam Web has grouped various online resources into categories called "Research Groups." Our predefined Research Groups are collections of similar Web sources that you can use to narrow your search to find the information you want. You can easily adjust our predefined Research Groups or better yet, you can create your own personal Research Group, made up of only the sources you want.

Editing our Research Groups

Editing our predefined Research Group is easy. Simply click on "Edit Source List" next to any Research Group. From there, a small window will pop up where you can add or delete sources for your search. You can then save the changes or save the changes and resubmit your search. Note that you must become a Basic Member in order to edit sources. Basic Members can search using five sources at a time. Full Members can search using up to 10 sources at once.

Creating your own Research Group

In addition to our predefined Research Groups, Basic and Full Members of HighBeam Research can create their own Research Groups that include only the sources they choose.

To create your own Research Group, first make sure that you are logged in as a member of HighBeam Research. If you are not already a member, click on "Register" in the upper right corner of the HighBeam Web screen (its free and easy!)

After logging in, click on "Add a Research Group." Using the pop-up window, you will be able to name your Research Group, select sources, and then save your search. Basic Members can select up to 5 sources to include in their Research Group, and Full Members can select up to 10 sources.

Once your Research Group is created, you will see it listed in addition to the predefined Research Groups. You can then select your Research Group anytime you do a search. You can edit your Research Group, delete it, or create a new one. Research Groups can be modified at the HighBeam Web Results page, or, at the "My Research Center - My Saved Research Groups" page.
