Web Results Basics

Because the HighBeam Research Engine delivers so many results, only the most relevant results from your search will be displayed. In the upper left corner the total number of results found and the total number of results displayed will appear. Each result lists the article's title, the source of the item, and a brief summary of the item.

You can navigate through the Web Results one page at a time by clicking on Next, or by selecting a page number from the list to the immediate right of the number of results.

Sorting Your Results

Initially, articles in the results list are sorted by relevancy. You can sort the articles in the order you prefer by clicking the Sort by box and selecting one of the following options:

Relevancy - The HighBeam Research Engine assigns relevancy values after evaluating how closely the words in each article match your search term. Closer matches indicate higher relevance. When sorted by relevancy, the most relevant articles are near the top.

Source - Click the Source option to sort the items alphabetically by the source of the item.

In addition to relevancy and source, you may refine your search results by using the Refine by Source option, by editing the sources of your current search, or by using Search Again In to change the Research Group of your search.

Using Refine by Source

Refine by Source appears on the right side of the Web Results page. Refine by Source allows you to narrow the number of search results by displaying the search results from a source included in your search.

For example, if you searched using the Search Engines Research Group you will see only those items that both matched the search term and appeared in Google, Alta-Vista, MSN, AllTheWeb, and AskJeeves/Teoma. You can narrow your search to just those results that appeared in Google by clicking on the word Google. Once you have clicked on the word Google, you can review your results, or click on "All Selected Sources" and see all the results from all the sources you originally selected.

Editing Your Sources

You may also edit the sources of your search by clicking on the Edit Sources link located in the Refine by Source box. Clicking on Edit Sources will launch a pop-up window which will allow you to edit the sources within the current Research Group, or select a new Research Group and edit those sources.

Using Search Again In

With so many sites available to search, often times your initial search might not give you the results that you were looking for. You can quickly submit another search using a different research group by using any one of the options in the "Search again in" box on the right side of the page.

For example: You might perform your initial search using the Search Engines Research Group. After reviewing the results you could click on news or any other Research Group (including any that you created), and a new search with your existing search term would begin instantly.
