Charlotte, N.C., Transit System to Buy Norfolk Southern Land for Light Rail.

Jul. 28--Norfolk Southern has agreed to sell land and track along South Boulevard for Charlotte's light-rail project.

Charlotte Area Transit System will spend $14.75 million to buy a 6-mile band of land from Scaleybark Road to Interstate 485, just north of Pineville.

CATS will use the land to operate light rail on two parallel tracks from Seventh Street to I-485, starting in mid-2006. Freight trains will continue running on their own track south of Woodlawn Road, alongside light rail.

The city earlier bought the track from Scaleybark through uptown.
