Q. When should I stop fertilizing my evergreens and roses in summer?

A. It is important not to fertilize your evergreens and roses in late summer or early fall. At this time the plants need to be preparing for winter dormancy. Fertilizing in August and September may cause a new spurt of growth, thus interfering with the normal physiological "shut-down" of the plants for winter.

Ideally, roses should not be fertilized after the first of August. The plants need time to store sugars and starches for the winter. Roses don't need to be fertilized again until they show growth in the spring.
