Dear Carol: I received this houseplant more than 15 years ago. I have split it more than once but can't find its name in any of the plant books I've looked at. Can you tell me what it's called? - J.S., Sherrill.

Dear J.S.: Many gardeners are familiar with the snake plant, Sansevieria trifasciata, which can grow 3 feet tall with upright swordlike leaves with crosswise mottled light and dark green stripes. A common variegated form, S. t. "Laurentii,' has leaves with yellow edges.
