The use of topically applied immune response modifier imiquimod (Aldara[R]) goes beyond its FDA-approved application for treating genital and perianal warts. In an article in the April 2003 issue of Dermatology Times, Brian Berman, MD, PhD, reviewed cases and studies using imiquimod 5% cream for the treatment of warts, molluscum contagiosmn, keloids, hemangiomas, and basal cell carcinoma.
Dr. Berman cited an open label, noncontrolled study treating common warts five times a week with imiquimod 5% cream. About 56% of the subjects responded and about one third of them completely resolved their common warts with imiquimod. To describe its effect on molluscum contagiosum, Dr. ...
