Inspectors Use All Six Senses on Mexican Border.

May 31--OTAY MESA, Calif.--When the new-fangled security gizmos can't solve all the problems, the border inspectors charged with safeguarding the U.S. reach for their ingenuity and instincts. Like when they reach for the bottle of Oil-free Cornhuskers Lotion.

At this crossing between San Diego and Tijuana, U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service agents use a futuristic, gee-whiz computer to fingerprint commuters applying for border passes. Standing before the phone-booth-size machine, an agent rolls an applicant's fingers across a screen, which scans them onto a video monitor before digitally sending them off to the FBI for a criminal record check.
