Giant sequoia seedlings free to residents.(South Valley Bee)

More than 1,000 giant sequoia seedlings will be available Saturday to people living above the 4,000-foot elevation mark during a giveaway at the John M. Nelson Meadow in Camp Nelson.

People living below that elevation can pick up blue or valley oak seedlings.

WildPlaces Ecological Restoration and Education, a nonprofit group of volunteers working to preserve the forest's native character, is giving away the seedlings to encourage people in the mountain and foothill areas to use native species in their landscaping, said director Mehmet McMillan.
