Toyota's virtual stranglehold on the growing hybrid market looks set to be broken with the announcement of a cooperative deal to develop a new transmission-based hybrid system by General Motors and DaimlerChrysler, writes Andrew English.
The two companies plan to spend "hundreds of millions of dollars" developing a system to rival Toyota's, which is also licensed to Ford and Nissan. The proposed GM/DC hybrid will first appear in GM's US-market Tahoe and Yukon trucks in late 2007. Mercedes-Benz will develop it for luxury rear-drive passenger cars, with GM further developing the system for small, front-wheel-drive cars.
