Toys 'R' Us to convert one New York site to Babies 'R' Us in 2005.

Dec. 28--Toys "R" Us will close its Union Square store and convert the location into a Babies "R" Us by the end of next year, the company said yesterday.

The conversion may be a harbinger of future moves by the Wayne, N.J.-based company, which has said it expects to sell the Toys "R" Us division in order to focus on the more profitable and faster-growing segment of baby stores.

Toys "R" Us has "already said the low-performing stores are going to go," said Maria Weiskott, a toy industry expert and editor of Playthings magazine. "We expect there'll be more closings."
