North American fertilizer companies did not fare very well in the spring of 1992. Margins were decent on potassium- and nitrogen-based products, but phosphate fertilizer prices were weak. Mild cornbelt weather could result in a bumper harvest, possibly leading to government acreage set-asides that could hurt fertilizer demand. Significantly increased fall wheat plantings should mitigate the effects of corn set-asides, however.
